TORU WHĀ, KA REWA A MATARIKI

Sunday 30 June 2019 | 1pm

Chamber Music New Zealand presents Toru Whā, Ka Rewa a Matariki.

NZTrio will be joined by musician and composer Horomona Horo playing taonga pūoro in a programme reflecting on our past, while celebrating new horizons and possibilities.

Illustrated by the combination of instruments, composers, performers, music and culture, this programme invites discussion and contemplation of the first encounters between Māori and European, and the resulting effects on our culture, and the significance of Matariki in Aotearoa today.

Each piece tells a distinct tale or legend that links with Matariki, and includes three newly commissioned pieces, from Dame Gillian Karawe Whitehead (Ngāi Tahu), Martin Lodge and Jeremy Mayall, alongside works composed by Victoria Kelly, Richard Nunns and Gareth Farr.
